New MPIfG Book: Dealing in Uncertainty by Arjen van der Heide

Dealing in Uncertainty: Insurance in the Age of Finance (Policy Press, 2023) has recently been added to the MPIfG Books series. In his study examining British life insurance, one of the largest and longest established private insurance industries in Europe, Arjen van der Heide draws on more than forty interviews to trace the sector’s development since the 1970s and the rampant financialization and neoliberalization that characterized the period. Combining insights from science and technology studies and economic sociology, the author makes an invaluable contribution to the understanding of financial capitalism. Arjen van der Heide was a postdoc at the MPIfG from 2019 to 2021 and is currently a research fellow at The Netherlands Institute for Social Research in Den Haag.
