New MPIfG Book with Contributions by Jens Beckert, Colin Crouch, and Wolfgang Streeck
Wege aus dem Kapitalismus? is the title of a recently published book by Smail Rapic, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wuppertal, with leading figures from the fields of political economy and political sociology. In an exploration of “ways out of capitalism,” this comprehensive collected edition features Wolfgang Streeck, emeritus director at the MPIfG, and MPIfG External Scientific Member Colin Crouch as two of the five authors whose work was discussed in a series of conferences on the theme at the University of Wuppertal. The edition includes an essay by MPIfG director Jens Beckert. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, the conviction that capitalism is the most efficient economic system and an ally of democracy has increasingly been called into question, and the basis of consensus to which Western postwar societies owe their stability eroded. This is the starting point from which the contributing authors consider questions such as whether capitalism can be democratically reformed and whether alternatives exist that do not revert to authoritarian state socialism or corporatism. The book was published by Nomos (Verlag Karl Alber) in July and is part of the MPIfG Books series.
